7:01 am
happening on this last did of 2012. not only the fiscal cliff, but secretary of state hillary clinton in the hospital. we'll get to that in just a moment. a diagnosis of a blood clot. but some questions still remaining. we have some weather stories, including the latest on this horrific tour bus crash on an icy highway in oregon. it was packed full of tourists. and it skidded off the road, leaving nine dead, many more injured. and the live shot from new york presbyterian hospital where secretary of state hillary clinton is being cared for right now. abc's martha raddatz has the latest on her condition. martha, good morning. >> reporter: the secretary has not been seen in public since early december after an illness and then a fall. but this is the first time she's landed in the hospital. >> probably a good idea to -- >> reporter: on sunday, secretary clinton was admitted
7:02 am
to new york presbyterian hospital for treatment of a blood clot. according to the state department, in the course of a followup exam, the doctors discovered a blood clot had formed, stemming from the concussion she sustained several weeks ago. she was last seen december 7th after an overseas trip. on december 9th, the secretary canceled a trip, with her spokesman saying she was under the weather. later it was revealed that she had fainted from dehydration due to a severe stomach virus and suffered a concussion. abc news learned that in addition to being on an i.v. drip that week, she was treated by two teams of doctors, underwent a series of tests, and was experiencing headaches and dizziness. since that time, the state department said that clinton was working from home.
7:03 am
she notably missed her scheduled testimony on the hill regarding the attack on the consulate in benghazi, an absence that drew criticism from some republicans. this is not the first time clinton has had a blood clot. in 1998, she was hospitalized for a blood clot in her leg, following a vigorous travel schedule. she discussed her health and age with abc's barbara walters. >> is your age a concern to you? >> it really isn't. i'm thankfully healthy and have incredible stamina and energy. >> reporter: she does, indeed, normally have incredible energy and stamina. she was supposed to return to work this week. but this seems a very big setback. and there is so much we don't know. >> including where in her body this blot is. that could have a big significance in how it's treated and the seriousness of it. >> reporter: that's true.
7:04 am
i asked her spokesman whether the clot is in her head or her leg, they will not say. they have said she has other issues from the concussion but won't say what they are. >> it's puzzling, the lack of information, especially given the republican charges of benghazi flu or a diplomatic illness when they were failing to believe she was as sick as she was. >> reporter: true. but, as you know, the clintons are notoriously private. they just don't say much, especially about issues like this. >> have you ever dealt with something like this, where there's so little information forthcoming? >> reporter: i can't say i have. over the last few weeks, they've come back at us saying you're making it sound too serious. but, clearly, there are serious things going on. it just raises more questions when you know so very little. >> all right, thank you so much. we're joined by abc's chief health and medical editor dr. richard besser. we know she's been treated with anti-coagulant drugs.
7:05 am
does that tell you that the blood clot is not in her lungs or in her brain? >> everyone agrees that the most likely scenario is that she has another clot in her leg. that type of clot is called a deep vein thrombosis. she had one before, so it puts her at risk. she probably had a period of prolonged time in bed with the headaches and dizziness. that is a risk factor. >> we know that this is the kind of clot that people who travel long distances on airplanes get, people who are immobile get. it can be deadly. it killed david bloom. >> you worry about the clot breaking off, traveling into your heart and into your lungs. if that happens, your blood pressure can drop suddenly. you put someone on an anti-coagulant, that can keep it from happening. >> how serious is a blood clot?
7:06 am
>> we need to know more. in her leg, probably not serious. a few months on anti-coagulants. if she had a blood clot in her head is a different situation. if you fall and hit your head and you have bleeding in your head, you wouldn't put someone on an anti-coagulant. there are some rare type of clots in your brain. you have a central vein in your head that can sometimes cause clots with a severe head injury. they expect her to be in the hospital for 48 hours. things are not adding up. i expect we'll learn more today to shed light on that. >> very quickly, this sort of nebulous other health issues we keep hearing about. what could that be? >> we haven't seen her since december 7th. you can have trouble concentrating after a concussion, weakness in your body. we're not getting a lot of information. >> all right, dr. richard besser, thank you.
7:07 am
>> certainly wishing her the best. now to the latest on the fiscal cliff. just a matter of hours until we officially go over the edge. still no deal in sight. lawmakers scrambling this morning to put together an 11th-hour compromise or we'll be ringing in higher taxes along with the new year. jonathan karl is in washington. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, dan. with taxes set to go up at the stroke of midnight. talks went late into the night and will continue this morning. as washington teeters on the edge of the fiscal cliff, there is still no deal. as talks continued overnight, a voice of frustration erupted on the senate floor. >> something has gone terribly wrong when the biggest threat to our american economy is our american congress. >> reporter: the republican and democratic senate leaders negotiated all weekend long. the talks hit a brick wall. harry reid saying he was unable to even counter the latest republican offer.
7:08 am
>> at this stage, we're not able to make a counteroffer. it appears that there are things that stop us from moving forward. >> reporter: that prompted mitch mcconnell to call for a lifeline. >> i also placed a call to the vice president to see if he could help jump-start the negotiations on his side. i want everyone to know i'm willing to get this done. but i need a dance partner. >> reporter: and with that, vice president biden has now emerged as a key player, playing a direct role in the effort to strike a last-minute deal. the key sticking points remain the same. the white house wants taxes to go up on those making over $250,000 a year. republicans want a higher income threshold. they want to keep the estate tax from going up. there's still no agreement on what to do about those automatic spending cuts set to go into effect on january 2nd. both sides have said the cost of failure is extremely high.
7:09 am
>> if we're not able to reach an agreement, it will be dire. probably at least another million jobs lost, an unemployment rate over 9% and putting us back into recession. >> reporter: vice president biden and mitch mcconnell had several conversations deep into the night. and will continue those conversations this morning. the conversations were good, but time is almost out. >> the cutoff is tomorrow. we hear in your piece about the dire consequences here. most americans might not feel the effects immediately, right? >> reporter: most workers will feel some impact in their very first paycheck of the year, because the payroll tax cut expires. that's going up no matter what. the irs has changed the
7:10 am
withholding tables yet. but that will happen. >> that's not the way anyone wants to ring in the new year. jon karl, thank you very much. we turn to abc's ron claiborne with the other news. >> dan, imagine this. we're going to begin with good news. elizabeth, hello. >> yea! >> it appears that milk and dairy prices will not double. there's now support from both parties to extend the farm bill. without that legislation, milk could hit $7 a gallon with similar increases for cheese, yogurt, and more. the bill could come up for a vote later today. the deadly tour bus crash on an icy interstate in eastern oregon. it happened yesterday morning. on a treacherous mountain pass. steep, snowy terrain made it tough for rescuers to reach the survivors. horror on the highway in oregon. as the driver of this bus lost
7:11 am
control, sending the vehicle skidding off the road, through a guardrail, and plummeted down a 100-foot embankment. nine passengers were killed. at least 26 others injured. >> there was snow on the ground which made footing treacherous. we used a haul system to get the patients from the crash site back up to the highway. >> reporter: police cited the icy conditions on the interstate 84 as a contributing factor. but authorities say the investigation is still ongoing. the remote area is covered in about a foot of snow and surrounded by dense pine trees. the bus driver survived, but so far, the severity of his injuries have prevented him from telling his story. the group was on a final day of a nine-day tour and returning to vancouver after a stop in las vegas. the area where the bus crashed is called dead man pass. it's claimed quite a few other lives over the years. check out this dramatic scene.
7:12 am
a rescue helicopter crashed off of copacabana beach. beach goers could be heard screaming in the background. fortunately, all four crew members on the helicopter were okay. and the swimmer was saved by a surfer. and a moving moment at the new york giants/eagles football game on sunday. players from both teams stood with hundreds of newtown, connecticut, residents. among those attending the game, the family of jack pinto, the 6-year-old fan of the giants who was buried in the number 80 jersey of his favorite player, victor cruz. and finally, a dirty dozen words from 2012 that some people would like to ban for being overused and abused. spoiler alert, kick the can down the road. how about trending and bucket list? other terms nominated for a literary lashing are superfood, guru, and double down.
7:13 am
and -- guess what the most overused phrase of 2012 was? or at least the last couple of months. >> oh, just this week. >> it's right there in that box. not hard to guess. i think we'll hear a lot of that phrase in the next day or days. >> yes. all right, ron. thank you. >> guru is one that when i use it, i'm sorry that i did. >> really? because people call you a guru. >> of course, it happens all the time. i get tired of it. please, stop. next up is a story that means a lot to lawyers like me. the new year means a batch of new laws for states across the country. more than 800 in california alone go into effect tuesday morning, ranging from minor traffic regulations to the recognition of same-sex marriage to some that are bizarre. linsey davis joins us with more. >> reporter: good morning, dan. employers asking for your login info will be a thing of the

you can whip out proof of insurance on your smartphone. >> maybe we can have our driver's license on there. >> reporter: it turns out that 2013, they're restricting the number of cats in a household to no more than four in kansas. kentucky is apparently starting to look a lot like hog heaven. the state's growing population of feral pigs caused them to slap a fine on those caught releasing them into the wild. and in landlocked illinois, it's no longer legal to possess, sell, or distribute shark fins. and deep fryers beware. if you're in north carolina, it will now be a felony if you steal cooking oil. the value worth more than $1,000. something to think about. >> and yet, the federal legislators can't get a deal going. >> thank you, linsey. now to the latest on the

royal baby, will and kate, and big questions about whether or not her parents are trying to cash in on the approaching royal birth, launching baby items on their website. abc's lama hasan reports. >> reporter: just weeks after william and kate announced their royal baby news to the world, the royal mum-to-be's parents are announcing a line of baby goods with a regal little prince and princess theme. coincidence? or are kate's parents cashing in on their first grandchild? >> i believe that the middletons are cashing in. i don't think it's such a bad thing. they have to make money in some way. they can't be hindered by the fact that they're related to the royal family. >> reporter: it's not the first time they're being accused of using kate's royal connections to sell products from their online party planning website. it's the timing of the products that can be seen as odd.
